Butchery Provision Recognised at Industry Awards

Leeds City College’s butchery department made it through to the final of the Meat Management Industry Awards 2014.

The College was the only further education college shortlisted in the Training Scheme of the Year category and was recognised for its achievements at a ceremony at The Grand Connaught Rooms in London yesterday evening (4th June).

The awards ceremony, which was hosted by guest speaker and football legend Geoff Hurst, brought together a wide range of representatives from the meat industry. Major supermarkets, meat manufacturers, butchers and trainers gathered to find out who would take home titles such as Britain’s best butcher’s shop and meat retailer of the year.

The College was shortlisted alongside four other providers, for its Level 2 and 3 Meat Processing programmes. In the end it was pipped to the post by ‘Scottish Meat Training’.

Huw Southcott, Head of Full Cost Development, who attended with his team, said: “Being a finalist in the awards has been a great opportunity to promote the college, our butchery qualifications and how we work with the meat industry. The event also enabled us to meet other figures in the industry and to look at making links that may help us set up further training opportunities and apprenticeships in the future.”
